Wreck-It Ralph

Anybody that knows me knows I LOVE me some video games. You also know I LOVE me some movies. Usually, the two do not mix well together though. Video game movies are known to be pretty bad. Super Mario Bros., Doom, and Street Fighter were only a couple of the worst. But I give it to Disney... They made Prince of Persia a good video game movie and Wreck-It Ralph even better.

Wreck-It Ralph is about a villain of a 30 year old arcade game called "Fix-It Felix Jr." named Wreck-It Ralph. He is basically a cross between Donkey Kong and one of the characters from the video game "Rampage", which also features a character named Ralph. He gets no love from any of the other characters from his video game and decides to try to become a good guy. He journeys through the arcade games in search of a medal to prove he can be a good guy.

Within the movie, there are MANY references to real video games. As cool as this is, it is not a major plot point of the movie. So, if you do not understand or recognize anything about real video games... Don't worry. The movie will still make sense. For all the gamers out there, this is just a pleasant and exciting side note. Some of the video game references are from Mario, Sonic, Street Fighter, Pac-Man, Pong, and Q-Bert just to name a few. I'm sure more will surface when nerds like me get a hold of the DVD and can freeze frame the movie.

Wreck-It Ralph is basically for video games what Toy Story was for toys. It has friendship and adventure qualities much like Toy Story. It will probably also have sequels much like Toy Story. It was very humorous moments and had very real emotional moments a well. It was a very well-rounded movie. There were parts the kids loved and parts that only the parents understood and laughed at. This movie had something for every age. Basically, if you enjoyed Toy Story, you will enjoy Wreck-It Ralph.

Comedy: 5/5
Drama: 3/5
Horror: N/A
Romance: 1/5
Adult Humor: 3/5 - Only because many of the video game references are from the 80's and 90's. Not for anything rude or crude.
Overall: 4/5 - Great movie for kids and their 80's parents!
